In May 1990, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference approved a number of scriptural translations for use in the liturgy in Australia, in addition to the Jerusalem Bible in the 1981 Lectionary, including the following:
- the New Jerusalem Bible translation
- the New Revised Standard Version
- the New American Bible and
- the Good News Bible.
One reason for this provision was to provide alternative translations in situations where inclusive language was an issue or simplified translations for use in Masses with Children.
