"Rejoice and be Glad". With these words Pope Francis begins his latest offering to all members of the Body of Christ, and to all people of good will. I encourage you to read it yourself. In the meantime, here are some thoughts…
In number one we read: "The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence..."
This is a big call, and may ask more than many of us can handle. I know I struggle with it. Like you, I have been brought up in the scientific age, taught from infancy to doubt the existence of something I can’t prove. The problem is that God defies the precepts that science is built on. You can’t put him under a microscope, cut bits off him to put in a test tube, or view him through a telescope.
And now it appears that we are being asked to place everything we are and do in God’s hands, so that God can create in us the life he longs to give us. I don’t know about you, but questions race through my mind: What does this mean? How do I do it? Why would I want to do it?
Entrusting ourselves completely to God is beyond our ability to comprehend, let alone achieve. Yet, that is the starting point: sitting with the questions and, often in darkness, reaching out to God and asking him to lead…returning to that point again and again until, often imperceptibly, God leads us forward.
Tips for your faith journey
There is an underlying conviction informing the Pope’s latest offering: that you have been invited into God's life and happiness, no matter who you are, no matter how inadequate you may feel, no matter how far from God you might currently experience yourself as being. Say 'yes' to God's invitation and begin to experience the life for which God has created you.
